ABOUT US

What is Literacy Rising?

Founded in 2024 by high school junior Jennie Ren, Literacy Rising aims to spread the love of reading to underserved communities. Our team of high school volunteers works to make reading an enjoyable experience. We are a not-for-profit organization because we truly enjoy making a difference. We offer a variety of resources to benefit educators, students, and parents.

Why is literacy important?

Reading is fundamental because it builds vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and imagination. Reading is an important skill that will set a child up for success in the long run. In particular, rural school reading proficiency scores on standardized tests constantly score below state standards. This is an disadvantage when it comes to college admissions, since colleges take SAT scores in consideration. Standardized tests are also used as an accurate measurement of a student’s success rate because of grade inflation. College admission officers take standardized scores into consideration because of recent grade inflations in high schools. They use test scores to identify students who will thrive at their institute. According to research, one of the most effective ways to boost reading skills is to…. read! That’s why our team is committed to spreading the love of reading by offering reading kits, projects, and a personalized book recommendation quiz!
